Vie Bourgeoise

Soak up the unique atmosphere of the oldest manor in Trois-Rivières during a guided tour designed with you in mind! Immerse yourself in the world of Marie-Josephte Chastelain and her husband, Joseph-Claude Boucher de Niverville, a bourgeois couple from the time of New France. Food, clothes, customs… you’ll know all about the lives of our ancestors!

First, get acquainted with the early owners of the manor and learn about the exciting military career led by the man of the house. In passing, discover the expanse of their seigneurial land and the obligations it entailed.

Then move along to the common room, where society life took place. During the long winter evenings, Boucher de Niverville and his wife would use it to host and entertain the elite. There were plenty of opportunities to serve sumptuous meals and have a good time! Discover the social life of Trois-Rivières’ upper class by picking up a few charming pieces of gossip.

Next, enter the couple’s private area by going into their bedroom. Wedding ceremonial, omnipresent clergy, everyday costumes, personal hygiene and clothes are all topics covered in this part of the tour. Plenty of pillow talk!

Lastly, feel the unique atmosphere of the attic, a place of survival where precious foodstuffs were preserved. At the same time, test your knowledge of old trades. Do you know what a salt maker (saunier), a currier (corroyeur) or a webster (sergetier) did? Try and find out!

All along the tour you’ll discover the architectural beauty of the manor. In a last room, you’ll understand its evolution and the transformations that have made it one of Québec’s historic gems.
